Board of Trustees

The Governors, who are the charity’s trustees, are appointed by a number of north-east based organisations, including local authorities, the Church of England, the University of Durham, professional bodies and voluntary bodies. A number of Governors are co-opted by the rest of the Governing Body for their experience or expertise. All appointments are for a fixed period of time.

Mr. William Brooks

Bill Brooks

Bill Brooks has been a Trustee since October 1994 and Chairman of Governors since May 2008. He is also Chair of the Relief in Need Committee and sits on the Grants, Personnel and Property & Estates Committees. He is very proud of the fact that since their inception the Grants and Relief in Need committees have given well over ten million pounds to local organisations and to individuals experiencing extreme deprivation.

Previously he worked 28 years for a company called Rediffusion North East, visiting people’s houses and repairing their TV's. Following redundancy, he did various self-employed jobs including TV repairs, aerial rigging then driving and owning a taxi and installing and repairing burglar alarm systems. Much later in life he became a Northumberland County Councillor carrying out several roles including Chairman of Highways and Transport, before becoming Leader of Council.


Margaret Bozic (MBE)

Margaret Bozic

Margaret Bozic has been a Trustee since August 1998 and is currently Chairman of the Finance Committee and sits on the Relief in Need and Personnel Committees. She is a retired Chartered Surveyor, and also a Board Member of the Lit and Phil Newcastle and a Trustee of the Tyne and Wear Buildings Preservation Trust.


Rev’d Dr Alun Ford

Rev’d Dr Alun Ford

The Rev’d Dr Alun Ford is the Bishop of Newcastle’s representative and Vicar of Holy Saviour, Sugley, and has been a Trustee at Sherburn House Charity since November 2015. He also sits on the Grants Committee. After fourteen years in London, he moved to the North East in 2011. He brings to Sherburn House an interest in pastoral care and the nurture of the whole person. His recreational interests include hiking, running, and anything medieval—manuscripts, literature, theology, art, or history.


Susan Martin

Susan Martin

Susan Martin has been a Trustee at Sherburn House Charity since September 2008, and is Chair of the Home Care Committee. She also sits on the Relief in Need and Personnel Committees. Her professional life was spent in education working in schools for children with a range of learning difficulties. In her last post she was Deputy Head of a large special school in Sunderland for 14 years, and was involved in all areas of leadership, management and governance. Having taken early retirement when the Special Schools in Sunderland were being re-organised, she has for ten years been a Governor (now Chair) at Durham Trinity School, attending appropriate training courses.


Cllr David Stoker

Cllr David Stoker

Cllr David Stoker is a nominee from Durham County Council and has been a Trustee at Sherburn since July 2013. He currently sits on the Grants and Personnel Committees. He was also a Trustee at Sherburn from October 1994 until September 1996.

David was an academic for most of his career, mainly at Durham University Business School, where he was one of the Directors. He currently works as a coach, mentor, mediator, and facilitator with the NHS and in the charitable and not for profit sectors. He is a County Councillor, and his ward - Durham South includes Sherburn Hospital.

He is a connoisseur of lost causes being a Liberal Democrat, and a season ticket holder at Sunderland for fifty years.


Ray Pye

Ray Pye

Ray Pye has been a Trustee representing Durham County Council since November 2003. He lives locally in Sherburn Village, which gives him the opportunity to promote Sherburn House Charity and Sherburn Hospital. He is an active Trustee on the Finance, Grants, Personnel and Property & Estates committees, and also Chairs the Grants Committee. He has been involved in many volunteer groups over the years including many years as a school governor. He finds the work he does at Christ’s Hospital in Sherburn to be very rewarding.


Cllr Susan Davey

Cllr Susan Davey

Cllr Susan Davey has been a Trustee since September 2008 and sits on the Grants Committee. She is a nominee from Northumberland County Council. Susan is a retired Nurse and a keen photographer.



Michael Laing

Michael Laing

Michael Laing has been a Trustee since September 2008, and is a nominee from the Association of Adult Social Services. He is currently Director of Adult Social Care and Housing at Gateshead Council.


Dr Gillian Willmore

Dr Gillian Willmore

Dr Gillian Willmore has been a co-opted Trustee since March 2008, and sits on the Home Care Committee. From 2000 until 2014 she was Vice-Principal and Acting Principal at St Mary’s College at the University of Durham and has had many years of international and teaching experience. She is currently a Fellow of St John’s College, Durham.


Kevin Cummings

Kevin Cummings

Kevin Cummings is a representative from the Chapter of Durham Cathedral. He is a Chartered Insurance Practitioner, and worked as a Loss Adjuster handling agricultural and estates losses. In the voluntary sector, he has a long association with the British Red Cross holding Trustee and operational roles at county and national level; now an Honorary Vice-President of County Durham & Teesside Branch. He is also a former PCC Secretary and Fabric Committee chairman and Membership Secretary of the Bow Trust and a Regional Friends' Representative for the Historic Houses Association.


Jim Imrie

Jim Imrie

Jim Imrie is a Co-opted Trustee. He brings with him many years of professional experience previously working for many blue-chip companies such as Marconi and BAE Systems working in Australia and India before returning to the UK to set up his own Management Consultancy Company. He works as a Non Executive Director with small companies supporting the MD and Management team on strategic planning for the business and the operational plan to deliver it.
